Wilson to represent Barbarians

Glasgow Warriors co-captain Ryan Wilson will represent the world’s most famous invitational side this coming weekend, after being called up to join the Barbarians squad for this weekend’s match against Samoa at Twickenham.

The 32-year-old back-rower becomes the first active Glasgow Warrior to pull on the black and white jersey since James Eddie back in 2015, and follows in the footsteps of club legends including Al Kellock, Kevin Tkachuk and Graeme Morrison.

Only Rob Harley can lay claim to having made more appearances in a Glasgow jersey than Wilson, with the pair having made their debut in the same match against Leinster back in 2010.

It is the latest landmark in a momentous year for the club skipper, who reached the milestone of 50 caps for Scotland in March’s famous win over France at the Stade de France.

The selection sees Wilson link up with former Glasgow coaches Dave Rennie and Jonathan Humphreys, who will oversee the fixture at the home of English rugby.

“Every player wants to get the call from the Barbarians,” said WIlson.

“It means a lot to have the backing of my club to take up this incredible opportunity.

“The squad have just got together and I’m really looking forward to getting to know all the lads.”

Glasgow Warriors Head Coach Danny Wilson said of Wilson’s selection: “We’re all really pleased for Ryan. He gives his all to this club, having only missed one club game since returning from the 2019 Rugby World Cup, and is hugely deserving of a call up to the Barbarians.

“He’s spoken passionately about what it means to him to earn the call up and we believe he has more than earned his opportunity. We wish him all the best for the week ahead.”
