12 Warriors named in Scotland squad for 2019 Rugby World Cup

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has selected 12 Glasgow Warriors in his 31-man squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup, which gets underway in just over a fortnight’s time.

As was the case in 2015, the club contributes the highest number of players to the group set to board the plane to Japan, including five players set to make their second appearance on the sport’s biggest stage.

Fraser Brown, Jonny Gray, Ryan Wilson, Pete Horne and Tommy Seymour all return to the Scotland squad, the quintet having each been a part of the run to the quarter-finals in 2015.

There is an even split to the Glasgow contingent, after six forwards and six backs were selected in Townsend’s playing group.

Brown is joined by club-mate George Turner as one of three hookers selected in Townsend’s squad, with the duo joined by Zander Fagerson amongst the front-row options.

Scott Cummings’ run of form in 2019 has seen him earn a place in the squad’s second-row stocks, following his debut off the bench against France in Scotland’s opening Rugby World Cup warm-up match.

Gray and Wilson bring their invaluable experience and Test-match nous to the pack, combining for 95 caps between them as they prepare for their second Rugby World Cup.

Behind the scrum, both Horne brothers will be jetting off to Japan, as George joins elder sibling Pete on the flight to the Far East.

Ali Price will join the younger Horne as one of three scrum-halves in contention for a starting berth, whilst Adam Hastings follows in the footsteps of father Gavin and uncle Scott in representing Scotland at a Rugby World Cup.

The Glasgow representatives are completed by Seymour – who is just five tries away from the Scottish record shared by Ian Smith and Tony Stanger – and Sam Johnson, following the centre’s successful return to international action in Saturday’s win over Georgia.

Scotland open their 2019 Rugby World Cup campaign against Ireland in Yokohama on Sunday 22 September, with kick-off scheduled for 8.45am (UK time).
