Price extends deal with Glasgow Warriors

The newest Glasgow Warriors centurion will be adding to his tally of club appearances over the coming seasons, after scrum-half Ali Price put pen to paper on a new contract with Danny Wilson’s side.

The 28-year-old follows fellow British and Irish Lion Zander Fagerson in extending his stay at Scotstoun, as preparations continue for the 2022/23 campaign.

Indeed, reaching century of appearances in a Glasgow shirt in La Rochelle last weekend is just the latest milestone in a landmark 12 months for the scrum-half. his form saw him selected for all three Tests for the British and Irish Lions in South Africa this summer, becoming the first Warrior to earn a cap for the invitational side since Richie Gray in 2013.

A two-time winner of the McCrea Financial Services Player of the Season prize – in 2016/17 and 2018/19 -, Price made his debut for Glasgow Warriors in a November 2014 clash against the Scarlets.

Amongst his 18 tries for the club have been some highly memorable moments in the club’s recent history including a try-scorer in both victories over Racing 92 back in 2016/17; a classic scrum-half snipe in the 2019 Guinness PRO14 semi-final triumph over Ulster; and the finishing touch to a free-flowing move in an 1872 Cup win over Edinburgh in December 2019.

Renowned for his speed of service from the breakdown, Price’s leadership saw Wilson hand the scrum-half the captaincy for the first time at the Stade Marcel Deflandre last weekend.

His form in a Glasgow shirt has also seen him become an integral part of the senior Scotland setup, earning 46 caps to date in the dark blue jersey in matches including historic victories away to both England and France in this year’s Guinness Six Nations – the first time such a feat had been achieved since 1926.

Named as co-captain for the 60-14 victory over Tonga, Price featured all four of Scotland’s Autumn Nations Series matches, one of only six players to do so.

“I’m over the moon to re-sign,” Price told glasgowwarriors.org.

“My whole career has been with this club, since coming here as a 20-year-old. Everything I’ve mnaged to achieve in my career to date I owe to the coaches and team-mates I’ve had in the Glasgow environment, and I’m excited to keep going.

“It’s been an incredibly exciting time for me, and this week has been a bit crazy with the way it’s all panned out – captaining the team on my 100^th appearance and then this, there haven’t been many weeks like it! I feel like I’ve matured as a person as well as a rugby player while here, though.

“I just want to keep getting better. I’ve still got a fair few years left in me, and I want to be one of the best in the world in my position. I’m excited to keep improving and show what I can offer to this club.”

Head Coach Danny Wilson welcomed the announcement, saying: “It’s great news that Ali has committed his future to Glasgow Warriors.

“He’s a world-class scrum-half who’s hugely passionate about playing for this club.

“Over the last two or three years, Ali’s development has been clear to see at both club level and on the international stage, which culminated in him becoming a Test Lion in the summer.

“We’re all looking forward to continuing to work with him in the coming seasons.”
