Glasgow pair named in Fiji squad for Rugby World Cup

There will be a brace of Glasgow Warriors representing Fiji at this year’s Rugby World Cup, after Niko Matawalu and Mesu Dolokoto were both named in head coach John McKee’s squad earlier this morning.

It will be a
second appearance on the world’s biggest stage for 30-year-old Matawalu, who
followed up his contribution to Glasgow’s 2015 Guinness PRO12 title win by
starring for his country at the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England.

His form in
a Warriors shirt this season earned him a recall to the Fijian setup ahead of
the 2019 Pacific Nations Cup, having last represented the Flying Fijians in
their November Test against Ireland back in 2017.

The
scrum-half – who is equally comfortable playing on the wing – was named amongst
the substitutes for his country’s final two matches in the competition, coming
off the bench in victories over both Canada and Samoa.

It will be a
first World Cup appearance for summer arrival Dolokoto, who has also been
heavily involved in Fiji’s Pacific Nations Cup campaign over the last few weeks.

The hooker
made three substitute appearances over the course of the tournament, scoring his
first international try in his side’s win over Canada.

The 24-year-old
is coming off the back of a season that saw him help Fijian Drua to the
National Rugby Championship title in Australia – the team’s first-ever success
in the competition.
