14 Warriors selected for Scotland summer tour

Scotland Head Coach Gregor Townsend has named 14 Glasgow Warriors in a 40-man squad for the upcoming summer tour to Argentina, including two uncapped young talents from the Scotstoun side.

The tour will see Townsend’s squad take on Los Pumas in a three-Test series, in addition to a Scotland A fixture against Chile – the first outing for the A squad since February 2014.

After a breakout campaign that saw him rewarded with both the Land Rover Young Player of the Season award and a new contract with the club, Ollie Smith is included in Townsend’s playing group as he seeks a first senior Scotland cap.

Similarly, Murphy Walker retains his place in the senior national squad after being included for the first time ahead of the 2022 Guinness Six Nations finale against Ireland, the tight-head rewarded for a head-turning introduction to professional rugby.

There’s also a place for triple club award-winner Rory Darge, the openside flanker included despite missing the conclusion of the season after sustaining a knee injury against the Vodacom Bulls in Pretoria at the end of April.

George Horne returns to the international setup after missing the 2022 Guinness Six Nations due to injury, having scored a brace of tries on his last visit to Argentina back in a 44-15 win in the summer of 2018.

Ali Price is the most-experienced Warrior in the squad with 51 caps, the 2021 British and Irish Lion behind the totals of only tour captain Grant Gilchrist and former club-mate Jonny Gray in the full squad.

Price’s fellow Lion Zander Fagerson is also included, with the tight-head set to reach a half-century of caps for his country if he plays in all three of the summer Tests.

Jamie Bhatti and George Turner join Fagerson amongst the front-row options, with hooker Turner having been involved in each of Scotland’s Test matches in 2022 to date.

Scott Cummings and Matt Fagerson are both selected as they continue their return fron injury lay-offs, the former looking for his first international involvement since November’s win over Japan at BT Murrayfield.

Ross Thompson is rewarded for a consistent season at fly-half for the Warriors with inclusion in the 40-strong squad, as the number 10 looks to add to his solitary cap against Tonga last autumn.

The centre pairing of Sam Johnson and Sione Tuipulotu are both included, the pair having made over 800 metres with ball in hand between them over the course of the 2021/22 season.

Rufus McLean completes the Glasgow contingent, the winger having made an electric start to life on the international stage with a brace against Tonga.

Incoming signing Huw Jones is also amongst the players selected by Townsend, the utility back in contention to add to his tally of 31 caps for his country to date.

The tour begins on Saturday 25 June as Scotland A take on Chile, with kick-off at 9pm UK time.
