Rennie: That was the response we wanted

Glasgow Warriors head coach Dave Rennie was delighted with the performance of his side in their 30-7 victory over Ulster at Scotstoun this evening, a result which sees them maintain their spot at the top of Guinness PRO14 Conference A.

The home side ran in four tries to secure a bonus-point win in front of a capacity crowd, with the Warriors’ defence also impressing in the penultimate match of the regular season in Glasgow’s west end.

“That was the response we wanted,” said Rennie.

“We knew that tonight would be tough and that both sides had a lot riding on this game.

“We felt like we had something to prove after last week, and we’re rapt with the attitude of the boys tonight.

“Some of our guys were playing for their futures tonight, with regards to being involved over the next few weeks. Everyone understands that we’re not afraid to make the big decisions. We needed to stand up after last week – we’re better than that, so tonight was a chance to prove that. To not concede after the eight-minute mark was massive for us.”

Jonny Gray became the latest member of the Glasgow Warriors Centurion Club, as the second row marked his 100^th appearance by claiming the man-of-the-match award in an impressive defensive display.

“I thought Jonny was fantastic,” said Rennie.

“He was a huge part of our defence and had the bit between his teeth tonight – he wasn’t too happy about starting on the bench last week.

“I thought it was a brilliant performance from him on his 100^th appearance, and it was good to put in a display like that for him.”

The Warriors now travel to Dublin next week to take on defending champions Leinster, as the race for a home semi-final enters its final stages. Rennie insists that nothing will change in his side’s preparations for the fixture, however.

“Our mindset is to win each game, as it always is,” he said.

“Leinster away is going to be tough, but it’ll be good for us – we know there’s still a chance that we could have a playoff in Dublin down the line.

“We’re not too concerned with what side they put out, because we know they’ve got good depth. They’ll be a good side.”
