Matt Smith and Lewis Wynne have signed professional contracts with the club

Lewis Wynne has been rewarded for his impressive start to the season with a two-and-a-half-year professional contract with Glasgow Warriors until May 2019.

Wynne started the 2016/17 season as a member of the BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy and has been a prominent figure in the Warriors side amassing ten caps.

Able to play in any position across the back-row Lewis’ form has earned him many plaudits, notably from the Scotstoun crowd as he was voted the McCrea Financial Services Warrior of the Month for November.Lewis Wynne has played 10 times for Glasgow this season

He is joined in signing a professional contract, from 1 January 2017, by fellow Academy member Matt Smith.

The flanker has signed a one-and-a-half-year deal with the club until May 2018.

Yet to make his Warriors debut, Matt has represented Scotland at all age-grades scoring three tries in nine appearances for the U20s and plays for Glasgow Hawks in the BT Premiership.

Both Matt and Lewis were members of the Stirling County side that won the National Youth Cup in 2013 and have progressed through the ranks together since.

Speaking to about signing a professional contract Lewis said: “It’s a dream come true to sign a contract with Glasgow and to be able to say that I'm a professional rugby player is a fantastic feeling.

“At the start of the season I didn’t expect to get the opportunities I have, but I feel I have given a good account of myself and I've learnt so much as part of the squad. 

“Going forward I want to pull on the Warriors jersey as much as I can and continue to learn and develop.”

Matt Smith said: “I’m delighted to sign my first professional contract and I'm looking forward to showing Warriors fans what I can do.

“I'm learning all the time and I'm excited about the opportunity to develop as a member of the Warriors squad.”

Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend said: “It is a testament to the work that is put in from the coaches and players in the BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy, that two more players have come through and earned the opportunity to become professional players.

“Lewis has taken the opportunities he's had already this season and works incredibly hard at training and during games.

“Matt has shown in a Scotland U20s shirt just what he is capable of and he will flourish by spending time with the back-row players we have here at Glasgow.”

BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy manger fo Glasgow and the West, Jamie Dempsey added: "It’s great to see another two players from the BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy sign professional contracts with Glasgow Warriors. 

“Lewis has stepped up this season and has made a big impact with the Warriors, while Matt has a big future ahead of him having featured regularly for Scotland U20s.”
