Edward David Kalman was tight head in the Cambridge team who beat Oxford in the 2005 University match at Twickenham. The following summer he joined Border Reivers, and a year later he moved to Glasgow Warriors, returning to the region in which he learned his rugby.

His move to Reivers was followed with national recognition through Scotland A selection. He has now played nine internationals at that level, starting in six.

His Scotland A debut was against Australia A at McDiarmid Park, Perth, in November 2006, and his first start was against England Saxons the following May in the Barclays Churchill Cup match at Twickenham. A year later he played in all three of the Scotland A matches in the Churchill Cup in Canada and the USA. He played in two A internationals in 2009 – the 22-all draw against Italy in February at McDiarmid Park, Perth, and as a replacement in the win over Tonga at Galashiels in November.

Two weeks before the Perth match he missed the A international against Ireland A as he was withdrawn for the selected team so that he could travel to Paris as cover for national XV.

Ed’s competition debut for Reivers was a replacement against Connacht at Netherdale on the opening day of the 2006-2007 Magners League, and he had his first start the following month in victory against another Irish province, Leinster, also at Netherdale. His first try for Reivers was in the Heineken Cup victory against Overmach Parma at Netherdale in October 2006, and he made his first appearance in a national context as a replacement for Scotland A against their Australian counterparts at McDiarmid Park, Perth, in November 2006.

He also had a replacement role in  the A international victory against Italy on the same ground three months later, and his first start at that level was in the Barclays Churchill Cup match against England Saxons at Twickenham in May 2007. He was starting tight head a year later in all three of Scotland A’s matches in the Churchill Cup in North America.

Ed is a product of the Whitecraigs club, having played in the Glasgow south-side club for 10 years from the age of 8. While at Belmont House School in Whitecraigs, he played for Glasgow Schools, and he went on to have two seasons in the Glasgow under-20 team from 2000 to 2002. His adult rugby has been in England, first with Durham University while he was studying for a physic degree. He was then in Newcastle Falcons’ development squad, and in February 2005 he was loaned to Leeds Tykes as emergency cover for one game. At Cambridge (Fitzwilliam College) he read an MPhil in Technology Policy.
