Alastair Kellock is an inspirational leader for both Glasgow Warriors and Scotland, and received the massive honour of being named as skipper for the 2011 IRB Rugby World Cup at the head of an eight-strong Warriors contingent.

Kellock was at the forefront of Glasgow's record-breaking season in 2009/10, when they became the first and so far only Scottish club to make the play-offs of the Magners League/RaboDirect PRO12.

The lock made such a favourable impression on his arrival at Glasgow Warriors when he joined the club in 2005 that he was immediately appointed captain. His first competition appearance was against Newport Gwent Dragons at Hughenden on the Magners League’s opening day, and he has continued in charge ever since.

A former pupil of Bishopbriggs High School, Alastair played in 10 internationals while with rivals Edinburgh before moving back home to join the Warriors.

His senior Scotland debut was in the non-cap tour game against Queensland Reds on the 2004 summer tour of Australia. He went on to gain his first cap against Australia at Murrayfield in the opening match of the 2004 Abbey Autumn Tests, coming on as a replacement, as he did when he won his second cap against Romania in the summer of 2005.

Alastair made his first Six Nations Championship appearance in Scotland’s victory over France at Murrayfield in February 2006. He has since gone onto win 27 caps for Scotland, captaining them on three momentous occasions. He took over the captaincy from injured team-mate Chris Cusiter to lead Scotland to glory against Australia at Murrayfield in 2009 and for both victories on Scotland’s two Test tour of Argentina in 2010.

Alastair has played for Scotland in under-19 and under-21 international rugby, including the younger age group’s 2000 World Championship in France.

He added to his tally of honours by playing in the team who won three ‘A’ internationals in 2008 – against Italy by 37-15 at Mogliano, near Venice, against Ireland (67-7) at McDiarmid Park, Perth, and captain against Georgia (69-3) on his home ground, Firhill.

He had three more appearances in Scotland ‘A’ wins in the IRB Nations Cup in Bucharest in June 2009, when he scored a try against Russia.

His club rugby was initially with Allan Glen’s before he moved to Stirling County, from where he was awarded his professional contract with Edinburgh. Among many community and charity commitments, Alastair now supports his club of origin by presiding as Director of Rugby at Allan Glen’s and is a patron of Asthma UK educating young sufferers about how he has overcome the condition to reach the pinnacle of Scottish rugby.

Kellock, who is a member of the Scottish Institute of Sport, played district rugby for Glasgow at all four levels from under-16 to under-19 and was in the Scottish Schools’ team in 1998-1999 as well as touring New Zealand with the Scottish youth development squad in 1999.

Honours: Scotland, Scotland A, Scotland u21, Scotland u19
