Glasgow Warriors are well represented in the various shortlists for the inaugural Magners League Awards which take place at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Monday night (23 August). ![]() Driving ahead - Alastair Kellock and Jon Welsh are among the Warriors that have made the shortlist for the various Magners League Awards. The Warriors will be hoping to scoop at least one of many awards on offer as prop Jon Welsh (Young Player of the Season), captain Alastair Kellock (captain of the Magners League Dream Team) and head coach Sean Lineen (Coach of the Season) are all among those in line for accolades. Flanker John Barclay and stand-off Dan Parks both made the 2009/10 Magners League Dream Team alongside Kellock for their eminent performances for the Warriors. Welsh, Glasgow's 23-year-old prop, is listed among the league's brightest young stars for the Magners Young Player of the Season award. The prize is open only to those players who were under 23 and uncapped at the start of the season. They also had to play a minimum of 300 minutes in the 2009/10 campaign.
Having spent his first year as a professional working on his fitness and conditioning, Welsh made a significant impact in the Warriors' front row when he finally took to the field. His stand-out performances, which regularly saw him selected ahead of two seasoned internationalists in Kevin Tkachuk and Justin Va'a, the former electrician went onto win two Scotland 'A' caps in November, something he hopes to add to in the very near future. He said: "It's a huge honour for me to play for Glasgow. It's my hometown club and I'm excited to live my boyhood dream each and every day. "I'm absolutely delighted to be named alongside so many great young players, but with that, I also recognise that I have some stiff opposition for this award." Three Warriors from the 2009/10 squad (John Barclay, Alastair Kellock and Dan Parks) were named in the Magners League Dream Team earlier this year, but Glasgow skipper Alastair Kellock, who will attend the glittering ceremony, is one of the front runners to be named on Monday as captain of the side. In his fourth season as Glasgow head coach, Sean Lineen guided his side to the very first Magners League Play-offs and their highest ever position in the League (third). The Warriors' penultimate preparation game, against English Premiership side Sale Sharks, takes place tonight (Friday 20 August, kick-off 7.30pm) and is the only home pre-season game of the year. Tickets - priced £10 for adults and £5 for under-18s and concessions - are available now by logging onto www.glasgowwarriors.org or by calling 0844 800 3490. They are also availble from the ticket centre at the ground from 6pm. Season ticket holders are entitled to THREE briefs for the game, one for themselves and two for friends or family (on a like-for-like basis). |
