SWINDALL RETURNS TO GLASGOW RANKS The number of injuries in the Glasgow Warriors squad has decreased significantly over the past month as a result of the hard work and professionalism of the club's medical staff. The Warriors were forced to withdraw from the Challenge Vaquerin tournament in France at a time when 24 fulltime players from a squad of 36 were sidelined through injury. However, four weeks on, the team is now only missing eight front line players in the medium to long term as the likes of Scotland internationalist Rob Dewey and Scotland 'A' cap Calum Forrester return to full training. Those expected to return to full match fitness in the very near future include: Pat MacArthur (shoulder), Jon Welsh (leg), Rob Harley (chest), Graeme Morrison (knee), Richie Vernon (shoulder) and Ruaridh Jackson (ankle). Most will seek to complete their recovery by playing some part in Glasgow's pre-season games. Those with medium to long term rehabilitation periods - John Barclay (Achilles), Johnnie Beattie (shoulder), Chris Cusiter (knee), James Eddie (shoulder), Colin Gregor (knee), Dougie Hall (hand), Alastair Kellock (knee), Dave McCall (hamstring) - will not only continue a rigorous schedule of treatment, but they will make a proactive contribution to the running of the club. From mentoring the Elite Development Squad players to video analysis support and media and PR activities, the players will seek to make as much of an impact off the field as they otherwise would do on it. Meanwhile, Glasgow have enlisted former Warrior Stevie Swindall as back-row cover as they await the return of Beattie and Eddie. Swindall has made 66 appearances for Glasgow (scoring six tries) between 2004 and 2009. During his season in England, he played for Rotherham Titans, captaining them on several occasions. On his return to his hometown, where he began his playing career with Whitecraigs and latterly Glasgow Hawks, Swindall said: "I got a call on the night I returned from holiday asking if I was fit and available to play. "I absolutely jumped at the chance to come and see the new facility at Scotstoun and get back training with the friends I grew up with. I'm looking to grab this opportunity with both hands." |
