Glasgow chief executive Kenny Baillie today praised the home support and his off-field staff for helping achieve a record attendance at a Warriors game during yesterday’s (Sunday 27 December) Greaves Sports 1872 Cup derby against Edinburgh.

A sell-out crowd was anticipated for the match at Firhill (which Glasgow won 25-12) and a final attendance was recorded at 8,830 – an increase of 4,099 (from 4,731) since the age-old trophy was resurrected in 2007.

Baillie said: “Glasgow’s support has steadily increased over the past few years and it is testament to the hard work of our staff that we have yet again broken the attendance barrier for professional rugby in the west of Scotland.

“The Warriors have huge potential off the field, as well as on it, and yesterday’s attendance reaffirms the appetite that exists for top level sport in Glasgow.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all those that came to Firhill for the game and hope to see them back here in the near future.”

Baillie also congratulated head coach Sean Lineen and his on-field team for a stirring performance, helping seal the victory which re-establishes the Warriors at the top of the Magners League table.

He continued: “It’s exciting to see Scotland’s two professional teams competing for success in the Magners League and it gives me particular delight that Glasgow are leading the way.

“I wish Sean and all the players the very best of luck for the return leg of the 1872 Cup derby at Murrayfield on Saturday.”
