Although Glasgow Warriors will face mammoth opposition this coming Saturday (10 October, kick-off 3:45pm) when they take on French giants Biarritz at Firhill in their opening game of the Heineken Cup, today they were challenged to put their team-room talents under the microscope by one of Scotland’s brightest prospects for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Tickets to Saturday’s game against Biarritz - priced at £15 for adults in advance with a new AnyGame voucher (£20 on match days), £10 for concessions (including students) and £5 for under 18s – can be purchased now by calling the Ticket Hotline on 0844 800 3490 or by CLICKING HERE. Sixteen-year-old Sean Doherty is Scotland’s under-18 table tennis champion, and with the sport being a popular one during players’ rest periods, it seemed fitting that they accepted Sean’s challenge, especially with their new training base at Scotstoun becoming the venue for table tennis when the Games arrive in Glasgow. Glasgow stand-off Dan Parks, who is known to be as equally skilful on the table tennis table as he is on the rugby pitch said: “It was great to meet Sean today and get the chance to play against someone who has every chance of realising his dream to compete for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. “He’s too good for me at table tennis so I and the rest of the Glasgow squad wish him all the best for the future. We’ve got every confidence that he’ll be part of what should be a great tournament.” Sean Doherty added: “I’m a big sports fan so it was a fantastic opportunity to be able to play four of Glasgow Warriors’ big international stars at my sport today. “I’m grateful to the Warriors for taking part in such a unique challenge and I’ll now be following them with great interest and wish them the very best of luck for their game on Saturday.” The challenge was supported by McCrea Financial Services who have signed a one-year-deal to become an official sponsor of Glasgow Warriors. The McCrea brand will be worn on the sleeve of Glasgow’s Biggest Team throughout the 2009/10 Magners League and Heineken Cup campaign. Managing Director of McCrea Financial Services, Douglas McCrea said: “We were delighted to assist in organising this challenge match between Sean and the Glasgow players. “I have every confidence that Sean will be one of Scotland’s leading players at the Commonwealth Games. “Having seen the Glasgow boys’ performance at table tennis I will be encouraging them to stick with their main sport!” |
