FORMER WASP McMILLAN BELIEVES GLASGOW HAVE ENOUGH STING PDF Print

Glasgow scrum-half Mark McMillan, 26, believes his old club London Wasps is the ideal test for the Warriors before the start of the 2009/10 Magners League season on Friday 4 September.

The Warriors face Wasps at Firhill on Friday night (28 August, kick-off 7:30pm) in their only home pre-season friendly, but the real battle comes the following weekend when reigning Magners League champions and former Heineken Cup winners Munster come to the city in search of League points.

However, despite McMillan enjoying successes in the Heineken Cup and the Guinness Premiership during his time in the UK capital, he believes Glasgow have enough firepower in their arsenal to get a result.

“I don’t think there are many better tests in the lead-up to as important a game as Munster and Scarlets the week after,” said the Scotland ‘A’ international. “Wasps will produce threats all over the park but so will we.

“They have got a great pack, which is very mobile, and which will really challenge our forwards, so we’ll need to be up for that and I’m sure we will be.

“They’ve got a lot of attacking threats so we have to be wary, but our defence has been one of our strengths throughout pre-season so far. We need to build on that because it will be tested whilst making sure our attack tests their defence.”

McMillan, a product of Stirling County, also believes that the Glasgow support will not only be treated to a fine Glasgow display, but the opportunity to see them in action against a formidable Wasps XV.

“I think this is their last pre-season game as well. In the two games they’ve played already, against DAX and Treviso, they’ve fielded some strong players. I fully expect them to field as strong a team as possible against us.

“It’s a good intro to the season because it’s a stern test for us and it’s obviously against a high-quality side, but the focus is entirely on Glasgow.

“We’re ready for the challenge and I think we’ll give them a fright if they’re coming here expecting to win.”

The Warriors started their pre-season in France at the Challenge Auvergne tournament in Issoire. The trip to the South of France coupled with training in Arbroath with 45 Commando Royal Marines, once again proved to be a hit with the players.

“Pre-season has been excellent and the French trip was invaluable. We got some really good work done there and we got a better idea of what we needed to improve on.

“We’ve tried to work on those areas of improvement in the build-up to the Wasps game and more importantly in advance of the Munster game.

“It’s been good. It’s been very positive and we’ve got a lot of terrific work done in the build-up to the start of the season.

“Wasps on Friday will be a great test for us but I’m confident we’re more than ready for that test.”

Tickets for the Wasps friendly are priced at £15 for adults, £10 for concessions and £5 for under 18s. Season ticket holders can attend this match, and bring along a friend, free of charge.
