Glasgow Warriors ran out 11-20 winners in their first pre-season clash of the year at the Challenge Auvergne in Issoire, France. After the game, head coach Sean Lineen said: "I wasn’t too worried about tonight’s score but more the way in which the players got through the game. “Stade Rochelais have the start of their championship next week so they really came at us. They played a full field defence which didn’t help us when we tried to play from side to side, but the boys started playing up the middle a bit more and we came through it.” On those who impressed most, Lineen continued: “Tim Barker had a great game in the second row and Richie Gray was outstanding as well as Justin Va’a. “In the backs, Peter Horne was outstanding and Mark McMillan really galvanised the team when he came on at half-time. Peter Murchie was also very good and was very busy throughout.” The Warriors scored three tries to one with a penalty and a conversion from captain and stand-off Dan Parks. Two early penalties from Stade put the Frenchmen on front, but Parks put the opening points on the board with a penalty of his own. Hefin O’Hare touched down first but Parks could not add the extras. Stade crossed the whitewash before the break to give them a three point edge at half-time. The Warriors dominated proceedings in the second half with Heriot’s and National Academy flanker Chris Fusaro scoring early on. Parks converted. Colin Shaw sealed the win with what Lineen described as “a cracking try” in the closing stages. Glasgow’s next game at the Challenge Auvergne is against host side Clermont Auvergne on Friday (7 August, kick-off 8pm local time). The Warriors’ final pre-season game is against London Wasps at Firhill on Friday 28 August (kick-off 8pm). Entry to the Wasps friendly is free for season ticket holders.
