Daniel Tailliferre Hauman van der Merwe joined Glasgow Warriors on a two-year deal in summer 2009 and made his debut as a replacement in the Magners League win against Cardiff Blues that October. The Canadian is now firmly established as a Firhill fans' favourite, his fantastic nose for a try coming through on any number of crucial occasions. He became the ninth Warrior to be selected for the Rugby World Cup when the Canucks included him in their squad for the global gathering in New Zealand. Born in South Africa, DTH began playing rugby aged five before progressing to the Boland u16 team. In 2003, the Van der Merwe family immigrated to Canada (Regina) where DTH attended Dr. Martin Le Boldus High School. He made the Saskatchewan u18, u21 and Rugby Canada Super League Prairie Fire teams. In 2005 Van der Merwe moved to Victoria, where he played for James Bay AA and won three straight BC Championships in'06-'08 and a National Title in 2007. He scored two tries on his international debut for Canada against Barbados in Bridgetown in June 2006, a Rugby World Cup qualifier which was refereed by a Scot, Malcolm Changleng. That same year, Van der Merwe was a member of Canada’s November tour to Wales and Italy. He started in all four games of the 2007 Rugby World Cup, scoring a try against Japan. After a 15 month absence due to injury, DTH has started all three test matches in 2009 - including Ireland, Wales and Georgia. Honours: Canada, Canada 7s |
