Glasgow Warriors back rower Calum Forrester admits he will always remember his debut for Scotland ‘A’ in the scorching Romanian heat – because he had to wring out his scrum cap afterwards. The 22-year-old, called up as a replacement for the injured Scott Newlands, suffered an ankle injury for the first week of the IRB Nations Cup in Bucharest and, as a result, missed the 49-7 win over Russia. But he recovered from the set-back in time to be handed the number six jersey for the win over Uruguay and says it was a memorable experience; largely because of the heat. Forrester said: “I decided that I’d started with the scrum cap on and that I had to finish with it on. I wrung it out after the game and it is now hanging in my shower drying out. “That was the hottest I’ve ever experienced in a rugby game. It was a long game and very stop-start. I felt my timing was a wee bit off, but overall I’m happy with the carries I made and the tackles I put in. “It has been tough because I injured my ankle in the first training session at Murrayfield, so I was sat on the sidelines for the whole week. “I then had to take a couple of days leading into the match just learning some of the other boys’ running lines. It is all just about adapting and getting used to playing. “It was a great surprise to be called up. I planned to come over and get a cap, so to get rewarded with a start was great.” |
