As many rugby players seek sun, sand and relaxation after a physically demanding season, Scotland 7s and Glasgow Warriors star Hefin O’Hare is opting for a much more energetic summer activity. O’Hare, who is currently with the Scotland 7s squad preparing for this weekend’s Emirates Airline Edinburgh 7s Festival at Murrayfield, plans to cycle solo the length of Britain to raise money for the Yorkhill Children’s Foundation – his local children’s hospital in Glasgow. Tickets purchased in advance for each day of the Emirates Airline Edinburgh Sevens Festival are priced at £15 for adults (£20 on the day), £10 for students and senior citizens and £5 for under 18s. Tickets are available to purchase now by logging onto www.scottishrugbytickets.com, by calling the Ticket Hotline on 0131 346 5100 (open 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday) or in person from the Murrayfield Ticket Centre (open 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday). Due to begin his journey from Land’s End on Monday 15 June, O’Hare plans to complete as much, if not all, of the 1,000 mile journey to John O’Groats in just seven days. That means pedalling approximately 140 miles, further than the distance between Edinburgh and Aberdeen, every day.
In order to explain his motivation for such a feat, O’Hare said: “I consider myself to be a very fortunate person with the things that have come my way in life and my career as a professional rugby player has put me in a privileged position. “I’m planning this bike ride so I can raise enough money to make a significant impact and change the life of someone less fortunate.” The aim of the Yorkhill Children’s Foundation (registered charity number SCO07856) is to help sick children by making their stay in hospital less distressing for them and their families by funding medical equipment, research and treatment facilities.
