Glasgow Warriors were tonight swept aside by a full strength Leinster side containing three of the clubs four players selected for the British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa. In a scrappy game, the Warriors’ discipline cost them dear as they spent half-an-hour of the evening reduced to 14 men. Felipe Contepomi and Ruaridh Jackson cancelled out each others early penalties before Kelly Brown shocked the RDS crowd by touching down in the tenth minute. Mark McMillan nipped the ball away from the base of the ruck and Max Evans chipped ball through for Brown to dive over. Leinster’s Rocky Elsom then finished off a simple training ground move. He wound-up his run from behind the lineout and crashed over. Warriors winger Lome Fa’atau then showed his deadly pace when Brian O’Driscoll and Contepomi got their wires crossed during a cut move. The ball became loose and Fa’atau pounced, kicking ahead. No-one was close to catching him as he touched down. Shortly before half-time, the first of the Warriors hat-trick of sin binnings saw Bernardo Stortoni sent off. However, the Warriors held onto their 13-8 lead at the break. The second half started a fierier affair. Kelly Brown and Jamie Heaslip were spotted scrapping on the deck following a ruck and both were sent to sit on the sidelines for ten minutes. As the hour mark approached, Leintser opened the flood gates. Glasgow were camped on Leinster’s five-metre line, pushing hard to try and stretch their lead. A quick penalty ignited Leinster’s attack and eventually bore fruit when Shane Horgan was set loose out wide and crossed in the corner. Contepomi converted. Sean O’Brien then followed suit as Horgan was brought down short of the line. However, he had enough strength in his legs to continue driving forward. Brian O’Driscoll was the link as he collected the ball from Horgan and released O’Brien for the score. Contepomi converted once again. With Justin Va’a in the bin this time for illegal play at the ruck, the home side worked through the phases to soak in enough defenders. Their hard work paid off as Jonathan Sexton received the ball in acres of space to dive over next to the right-hand post. As the game entered the final ten minutes, O’Brien snatched his second try to seal the game off and give Leinster a commanding final score-line.
