Glasgow Warriors suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Edinburgh tonight in the first leg of the David Lloyd 1872 Cup in front of a Scottish Magners League record crowd of 12,534.

The bonus point victory saw Glasgow fall from joint-second in the Magners League to fourth.

After the game, Warriors head coach, Sean Lineen, said: “That was a hiding. Both teams just couldn’t get going at the start.

“In the end, Edinburgh were more dangerous and their urgency was better. There’s a sorry bunch of men down in that changing room just now.”

Although Glasgow struggled to get things going on the field, it was the thousands of Warriors fans who raised the roof of the East stand at Murrayfieldas they turned up in full voice to support of their team.

Both Glasgow and Edinburgh stand-offs, Dan Parks and Phil Godman, exchanged early penalties in the opening quarter as both sides look to settle their nerves and gain an early advantage.

However, with only two Parks kicks on the board, that was to be Glasgow’s entire haul from the evenings work.

With captain Mike Blair in menacing form, a mistake on Glasgow’s line cost them that valuable early lead. The ball went loose when a pop pass to no-one hit the floor. Blair pounced on it to claim the first try of the night. Godman converted.

A penalty-a-piece from both Godman and Parks left just a ten point gap between the two sides at half-time.

Four minutes before the break, Edinburgh flanker Scott Newlands was sent to the bin, but Glasgow struggled to capitalise.

They almost did so in the 42nd minute when Kelly Brown gathered a high cross-field kick from Parks.

Brown towered above winger John Houston to collect and touch down but as the Television Match Official checked the replay to see Brown’s right arm was in touch, his outcome was “inconclusive” therefore the try was disallowed.

Shortly after Newlands’ return to the field, Simon Webster burned over for a cracking try. The winger cut a great angle to collect an inside pop from Godman. He then stepped Glasgow fullback Stortoni to touch down over the line. Godman converted.

Two further penalties from Godman stretched Edinburgh’s lead before man of the match, Hugo Southwell crossed for the home sides third try.

Starting from a lineout on the right touchline, Edinburgh went through the hands to Southwell who hit the line straight and at pace to storm over the line.

The bonus point try came three minutes from time when a series of slick passing saw centre Ben Cairns touch down in the corner.

The Warriors will now have to overcome a defecit of 33 points if they are to retain the David Lloyd 1872 Cup. The second leg of the contest on Friday 2 January at Firhill (kick-off 3pm).
