History will be made next month when one of rugby’s emerging nations, Georgia, visit Scotland on their first ever tour of the UK.

The Georgians will play the Scotland ‘A’ team at Firhill, home of Glasgow Warriors, on Friday 14 November (kick-off 6pm). They will also play Edinburgh the following week, the time and venue of which will be announced soon.

The ‘A’ team will be coached once again by Edinburgh head coach, Andy Robinson, who led the side to two victories from two last season against Italy ‘A’ in Rome and a record-breaking result against Ireland ‘A’ at McDiarmid Park in Perth.

Looking forward to an exciting autumn fixture at Firhill for the ‘A’ team, who reached the Churchill Cup final in Chicago in June, Robinson said: “I enjoyed the experience of coaching the Scotland ‘A’ team last season. I was very impressed with the attitude of the players and their work ethic was exemplary.

“I’m also pleased that the game is being staged at Firhill where I hope the Glasgow public will get behind the ‘A’ team.”

Robinson’s coaching team will be announced next week along with ticket prices and details on how to purchase.

Georgia, who are ranked 14th in the world, are affectionately known as ‘The Lelos’ which comes from ‘lelo’, an indigenous Georgian sport with strong similarities to rugby. Lelo has also been adopted as the Georgian word for a try. One standard cheer of Georgian fans is ‘Lelo, Lelo, Sakartvelo’ which means ‘Try, Try, Georgia’.

Their recent form is impressive and just last season, they lifted the European Nations Cup with a 22-20 victory over Spain in the final and the IRB Nations Cup, defeating Italy ‘A’ 25-3. Last year at the Rugby World Cup, they came agonisingly close to defeating Ireland, only losing out 10-14 and enjoyed their first ever victory at the final stages of the tournament with a 30-0 success against Namibia.

Scottish Rugby’s Chief Executive, Gordon McKie, added: “The IRB is investing heavily in supporting rugby in Georgia and we are delighted to support the worldwide development of the sport by hosting Georgia’s first ever visit to the UK.”

The ‘A’ team’s fixture against Georgia completes a month of international action for Scotland as the senior national team take on the All Blacks and World Cup champions South Africa at Murrayfield before heading north to the Granite City to take on Canada in the Bank of Scotland Corporate Autumn Tests.
