WARRIORS LAUNCH ‘DIAMOND HUNT’ PDF Print
Monday, 20 October 2008

ImageHaving watched enough Scottish rugby in his time, Glasgow Warriors head coach Sean Lineen is convinced that there is a rugby diamond playing in the Scottish domestic leagues and is determined to find him.

Lineen wants to find a player who has not yet made it to the highest level of the game but who has the potential in both ability and attitude – the diamond - and provide him with the opportunity to hone his skills, improve his fitness and impress the Warriors coaches.

Looking forward to the start of the Diamond Hunt, Lineen said: “Shade [Munro], Gary [Mercer] and I can’t get to games every week so it’s a great opportunity for us to see the club players train in a professional environment.

“It’s also a good opportunity for the club players, who have been recommended by their coaches, to come and show us what they’ve got.

“As an added bonus, all the players taking part will get tickets to come and watch the Leinster game at Firhill on Friday night.”

Earlier this month, Lineen called on all clubs from the Scottish Hydro Electric Leagues to nominate up to four of their best players (registered with their club) aged between 18 and 26 to attend the session.

The Warriors received 39 registrations for the ‘Diamond Hunt’ which takes place tonight at the Warriors’ training base at Whitecraigs RFC in Newton Mearns.

At tonight’s session, players in attendance will be put through a series of tests, drills and conditioning exercises and evaluated by the Warriors’ coaching team.  The players with the most talent and potential on show will be invited back to further sessions as the hunt for the diamond gathers pace.
