Glasgow Warriors lost their first home game of the season against a tough and physical Ospreys side.
Despite two scintillating tries from winger Thom Evans and Dan Parks becoming the highest points’ scorer in Magners League history during the 80 minutes, there was little to celebrate after the final whistle. A losing bonus point was little consolation for head coach Sean Lineen: “It’s very disappointing. We just didn’t execute the game-plan very well. We were beaten up, but you cant fault the boys’ efforts. "There were some great individual performances. It’s a real reality check of where we are and with Connacht next week, things are only going to get tougher.”
Safe to say Parks didn’t have his best day at the office; it took the stand-off until his fourth attempt at goal to succeed Ulster’s David Humphreys as the leagues record points scorer. However, the Scotland international redeemed himself late on as his accuracy with the boot set up the Warriors’ second try. The Ospreys opened the scoring through a Dan Biggar penalty before Kristian Philips claimed the visitors’ first try. But it was to be a night when Thom Evans was crowned Man of the Match with electric performances in both attack and defence. Just after the half hour mark, Parks claimed his record, and then Evans struck. With plenty work still to be done to get across the line, Evans burned past the Ospreys defence from the 22 metre line to touch down between the posts. Parks added the conversion to give Glasgow the lead at half-time despite such a nervy start to the game. The Ospreys took immediate action once they had re-appeared from the Firhill tunnel. A Dan Biggar drop goal was followed up by his second penalty to give them a four point advantage. Parks began to redeem himself with another penalty until he set Firhill alight when he sent a cross-field kick of pin-point accuracy to Evans who scored what could be a contender for try of the season. Collecting the ball at full tilt, Evans fired up the wing and a little shimmy kept the final defender at a distance so he could cross the whitewash. Although the game was played in perfect conditions on a warm evening, the Ospreys rained on Glasgow’s parade with only two minutes left on the clock. Stevie Swindall was sent to the sin bin and the visitors capitalised by touching down in the corner, Alun Wyn Jones getting the touch down. James Hook added the two points to seal the narrow victory.
