The Glasgow Warriors churned out a gritty win tonight as they defeated the reigning Magners League champions at Firhill Arena, leaping them in the league table in the process.

With high winds and heavy downpours for most of the afternoon, it was testament to Dan Parks’ accuracy with the boot to thread three vital penalties between the posts.

The Warriors came out of the dressing room firing on all cylinders and took the early initiative through the boot of Parks, but the Ospreys soon bounced back as stand-off Shaun Connor slotted two penalties in the opening 20 minutes.

At that point, the game began to show its significance to both sides as players tussled both on and off the ball.

With a very tight game in the first half, proceedings continued in that vain as the Warriors went in the hunt of victory.

Only two missed attempts at goal saw the home support wait with bated breath as South African referee Jonathan Kaplan made sure they played as much injury time as he could allow.

But as John Barclay, Dan Turner, Hefin O’Hare, Scott Barrow and Kevin Tkachuk all took the field in steady succession, the home support were treated to another fine Warriors performance.

After the game Warriors head coach Sean Lineen admitted that in the past, his charges may not have shown the mettle to seal that kind of victory.

He added: “The effort was outstanding. During our half-time chat, we spoke about the line-speed and defence, but when you get down to pitch level you can see why we struggling to get any real pace out there. It was very slippery underfoot.

“The forwards really paved the way for us. Our forwards coach Shade Munro has been working very hard with them and they were fantastic tonight.”

Lineen also paid tribute to the fans that turned out to get behind the team: “On a night like this, I thought the crowd were fantastic. Over 2,000 people braved the conditions tonight and they really got behind the boys.”
