Glasgow Warriors Daryl Gibson and Opeta Palepoi visited Middlefield Autistic School in the West End of Glasgow last week as part of the Warriors’ community scheme. The school has recently introduced rugby to teenagers to encourage social interaction, team work and healthy living. The group have little experience of rugby and so a question and answer session with an All Black and a Samoan internationalist was a great opportunity for them to learn more about Glasgow Warriors and rugby in general. Daryl and OP then moved into the gym and put the group through their paces with some fun rugby drills. The teenagers all had a great time and their teacher Mark Book said: “The young people at the school mostly keep to themselves but Tuesday proved that rugby can encourage team play and physical activity. “They were laughing and screaming with joy! Daryl and OP were great. They really engaged with the young people and took their needs into consideration - it was brilliant!” As the class continue to learn about rugby, it is hoped the link between the Warriors and the school will continue, with the class invited to watch a training session at Whitecraigs. |
